Outside, the city folded itself into twilight—rail tracks like silver threads, neon humming the names of places she could not remember choosing. Inside, the train smelled of paper and oil and the small, stubborn hope that people bring with them when they travel for reasons they refuse to name.

Drawing from the Beethoven opera, the film interrogates the concept of fidelio (fidelity). Alice is torn between being faithful to Félix and being faithful to her own desires and history.
