Always copy your players folder to save your progress and sensitivity settings.
These versions were often hard-coded to play only in the local language (e.g., Russian) and sometimes restricted connectivity to servers within that region. For a legitimate user who simply bought a key from a third-party site, this results in a game that is unplayable for non-speakers.
Paste the downloaded English .iwd files into the main folder. Place the english folder into the zone directory.
Note: If Steam does not allow you to select English, or if the game defaults back to another language upon launch, you are likely dealing with a region-locked version.
