The story begins with the quartet—Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo—attempting to return to New York City from Madagascar in a repaired, albeit decrepit, airplane piloted by the penguins. Instead of reaching the Central Park Zoo, they crash-land in the African savannah, where Alex is reunited with his parents, Zuba and Florrie.
