The case is reopened by the persistent IG Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna). He is an old colleague of the previous IG, Meera Deshmukh (Tabu), whose son Sam was the victim. Meera has retired but is still obsessed with finding her son's body. Tarun Ahlawat, known for his sharp intellect, decides to use Vijay's own love for movies against him. He hires a screenwriter to map out Vijay’s "perfect crime" to find the loopholes.
In a dramatic courtroom scene, Vijay is acquitted due to lack of evidence. The film ends with a poignant meeting between Vijay and Meera Deshmukh. He gives her the ashes of her son (which he had kept safe) and asks for her forgiveness, finally giving the grieving mother closure, while maintaining his innocence to the law.
