Years later, after a famously illicit performance across Notre-Dame Cathedral, Petit meets a New York–based photographer’s work showing the newly completed twin towers of the World Trade Center. Their sheer scale mesmerizes him. He sees the towers as the ultimate stage: two giant fingers pointing into the sky, separated by a risible gap that he alone could bridge.
