Unlike many glamorous telenovelas set in mansions or international locales, Ljubav u zaledju roots itself in the gritty reality of a specific Zagreb neighborhood—the zaledje (backyard/hinterland). The title is deliberately ironic. While the front of the houses facing the main street represent social success and order, the "backyard" is where the real stories happen. It is a place of laundry lines, overgrown hedges, peeping neighbors, and secret rendezvous.
