Interestingly, this is the only Middle-earth film to receive an R-rating (in the US). The extended action sequences at Ravenhill and the outskirts of Dale are significantly more visceral. We see the tactical ingenuity of the Dwarves—specifically the Iron Hills goat-riders and their "whirly-bird" arrow-destroyers—which adds a layer of medieval grit to the high fantasy setting.
