As the protagonist ages, the Monster becomes a distorted reflection. Buendia uses a brilliant literary trick here: he writes the Monster’s dialogue in italics that slowly takes over more and more of the page. By the middle of the book, the protagonist’s voice disappears entirely for three consecutive poems, leaving only the Monster’s gaslighting whispers. In the version, the typographical descent into madness is terrifyingly effective.
